Academic Success Coaching

In addition to serving as information specialists at the Academic Success Desk, success coaches provide one-on-one individualized mentoring to students.

Academic success coaches are trained peer mentors who work with students to:

  • Help identify and clarify their goals
  • Build an action plan to achieve their goals
  • Develop effective skills and habits based on the students' strengths
  • Evaluate and re-evaluate their progress toward their goals throughout the mentoring relationship

Meeting Topics:

  • Goal setting
  • Action planning
  • Study skills and learning strategies (e.g., time management, exam strategies, stress management)

Meeting Structure:

The length, frequency, and types of coaching meetings are based on the student's preferences and needs. Meetings may last for the entire semester or for only part of the semester and could occur weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, etc. It is up to the student and coach to determine how often and how long meetings will occur. Meetings may happen through a combination of several forums (e.g., face to face, telephone, or online/video). Ultimately, there are an infinite number of ways that this kind of mentoring can occur, and it is all based on the student’s needs.
