Resource Mentors are trained learning specialists who assist students with study skills. Mentors also work at the Resource Desk and Math Assistance Center check-in desk to provide information to students regarding academic support centers, tutoring, and campus resources.
Qualifications:
- Maintain a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 3.0
- Attend all trainings, events, and meetings throughout the semester:
- Onsite training
- Weekly resource meetings on Fridays, 2:30–4:00 p.m
- Online training
- Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and social skills
- Communicate effectively with peers openly and nonjudgmentally
- Possess strong listening skills with the ability to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and respect
- Demonstrate practical problem-solving skills with emphasis on communicating options and alternatives
- Possess a good understanding of university policies, procedures, and campus resources
- Commit one year (two semesters) to the mentoring position
UCOL Course Requirements:
- Register for a 1 credit hour course after being accepted as a resource mentor
- Complete online submissions of mentoring development assignments
Position Responsibilities:
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with students
- Work 15 hours per week
- Submit weekly activity reports
- Present study skills and college success workshops
- Assist students individually with solving academic-related issues
- Provide campus resource referrals and general information
- Provide assistance to academic mentors and Bepko Learning Center staff
- Complete weekly tasks to ensure upkeep of the collaborative learning spaces
- Mentor students on academic probation, student athletes, and students referred by instructors for study skills assistance
- Accept and embrace the quality and diversity of all students
- Submit a portfolio of work at the end of the semester
Resource mentors should expect to spend an average of 15 hours each week to meet the requirements and expectations of the Scott E. Evenbeck Mentor Scholarship Program.
